Mortgage rates hold steady as the Fed opens its two-day meeting

· Enrique Pelayo Jr., NMLS #131435

Mortgage pricing stayed close to its best level in about a month on Monday, and bond markets were quiet Tuesday morning as the Fed began meeting. The next real move likely comes with Wednesday's decision or Thursday's inflation report.

Monday was a calm day for mortgage rates. The average lender held near its best pricing in more than a month, even though tech stocks and tech-company bonds bounced back a bit. That bounce could have pulled money away from mortgage bonds, so holding ground was a good sign. Treasury yields, which mortgage pricing tends to follow, were little changed early Tuesday.

The Fed's two-day meeting started Tuesday, with the decision due Wednesday afternoon and a press conference from Chair Kevin Warsh after that. Futures markets strongly favor a hold. What matters more for mortgages is whether Warsh keeps the door open to another hike in December.

Smaller reports on durable goods orders, consumer confidence and new home sales come out Tuesday. The bigger test is Thursday, when September PCE inflation, the Fed's preferred gauge, and the first estimate of third-quarter growth are released.
